ABOUT

The Peer Advisor Program is based on the belief that high school students are capable of becoming self-actualizing individuals and have the capacity to share this experience with others.

Student Development Philosophy

The student development philosophy at the California School for the Deaf (CSD) is based on three major tenets:

  1. Students develop best in a challenging and supportive environment that integrates academic and personal development.

  2. Students benefit from being involved in their own governance, helping one another to become responsible and self-directed.

  3. Human development theories are the foundation for designing appropriate age-based student development programs, and evaluating their impact on student growth.

Students are encouraged to partcipate in decisions that affect their environment. The importance of involving students in their own governance should not be underestmated.  One quote that reflects this philophy is as follows:

Training Peer Advisors

Rationale for the Peer Advisor Program

Well-trained, responsible, concerned student helpers can make a significant contribution to any campus enviroment. Professionally prepared reading and training experiences can help students learn to be effective and unselfish helpers.

When students use and apply their new skills in working directly with other students, they tend to enhance their own personal growth. Working with others, they become increasingly resourceful, effective, and self-directed members of the campus community. A peer advisor program can influence the social attitude and adjustment of the whole student population. It can affect student outlook on grades, future aspirations, and life goals.

In the final analysis, their efforts can result in meaningful and rewarding experiences throughout their high school years and beyond.

Selection of Peer Advisors

All students from diverse backgrounds who are interested in leadership are encouraged to apply. The selection process starts when students submit formal applications for the Peer Advisor Program at the 9-week mark of the 2nd semester. Each application must be accompanied by two letters of recommendation from CSD staff. The Peer Advisor program coordinator checks students' academic and student life record. In order for students to be eligible for the program, students must have an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher, be in good standing with school records (behavior), and/or recently have demonstrated a desire to improve.

After the applications and school records have been screened, applicants are interviewed by a committee made up of current Peer Advisors and the Peer Advisor program coordinator. All applicants are asked the same general questions.

Selection of Peer Advisors are based on a point system:

  • Academic and Behavioral Standing

  • Quality of application

  • Strength of Letters of Recommendation

  • Interview Behavior (confidence, eagerness,  etc)

  • Quality of answers during interview

Year-Long Goals

One of the Peer Advisors major responsibilities will be to ambassadors for the Random Acts of Kindness project, in conjunction with CSD's Pupil Personnel Services (PPS). Peer Advisors will discuss, create, and execute projects that spread kindness on campus and beyond. These projects are expected to be completed in increments throughout the year.

Additionally, Peer Advisors will also be responsible for running the annual National Drug Facts Week (NDWF) in March. Through careful planning, Peer Advisors will generate ideas and activities to promote a healthy awareness of the effects of drugs.
